StudentsforService is a new not-for-profit that offers year-long service learning and community service opportunities to New York’s high school students.  Our goal is to build lifelong commitment to civic engagement in teens.

We believe that service is most powerful when it is a shared experience, revolving around a single organization or cause. We bring together like-minded kids from diverse schools and communities andconnect them to a non-profit for one year, giving them a deep understanding of that organization’s work and the communities it serves. Students truly learn the value of service and gain understanding of social problems that lasts a lifetime.

StudentsforService launched its first, year-long service learning program in the 2010/2011 academic year with City Year NY.  City
is a national non-profit that partners with cities across the
country and abroad to keep vulnerable kids in school and on-track to
graduate by recruiting 17-24 year old full time tutors, mentors and role
models to serve in our most under-resourced public schools.
Students have had the opportunity to participate in five projects with City Year over the course of the year and earn up to 28 hours of service credit.  These have included community improvement projects, assisting in vacation camps, and assisting City Year corps members as they work with young children in their schools.  Please see our Events Highlights page for photos of some of these projects.

In April 2011,
StudentsforService participated in NYC Service‘s official Global Youth Service Day project run by Up2Us, a national organization
whose mission is to advance sports as a solution for the critical challenges facing youth in America today. Global Youth Service Day is the world’s largest service event, and is run simultaneously in nation’s across the globe.  StudentsforService is proud to be a part of this international day of service. Please see our Events Highlights page for video clips of this event.

For academic year 2011/2012, StudentsforService has added an array of new projects and partnerships addressing the environment, computer literacy, hunger, and poverty to our roster of events.  Our new service partners include MillionTreesNYC, Friends of Van Cortlandt Park, ComputersforYouth, and Yorkville Common Pantry.  We will also continue our exciting programming with City Year NY and Up2Us. Please see our Home page for more information.

Our Background:

StudentsforService is directed by Katherine Soll and Chana Chenfeld.  After pursuing careers in media and the arts, both Ms. Soll and Ms. Chenfeld took time off to raise families while engaging actively as volunteers in their children’s school communities, neighborhood organizations, the arts and politics.  They have chaired committees of various organizations in both the public and private sector.  Having children in both public and independent school systems of New York City, they have a wide network in both communities and intimate knowledge of the politics, administrative and PTA structures and financing constraints of both environments.
